Keeping Your Home Tidy – Storage Units and Shelves for the Home and Garden
Are you a stickler for tidiness and cleanliness? Or are you the opposite, quite happy to leave things strewn around your home, garden and garage? One thing is for sure, it is the former who will be able to find everything they want quickly, and not suffer from “cluttered house syndrome”.
Most of us are probably in between the two extremes of ultra tidiness and untidiness, and I would bet that a majority would like to be a bit better organized within the house itself. And outside in the garden and garage. Personally, if I go into a house that is too spick and span, I feel a bit uncomfortable as it does not feel “lived in”. On the other hand, I do have respect for the owners who achieve that level of organization.
There are many ways to de-clutter your home, and shelves and storage are a key part of any strategy to have a neater home, in which you can find things easily when you need them. When deciding how best to organize things, it is a good idea to consider each area of the home separately. For example, look at each bedroom, the bathrooms, and kitchen separately and spend a bit of time in each to think what annoys you, what is untidy and what you need to do about it.
Let’s take the bathroom. Do you find you have toothpastes, soaps, and bottles of shampoos scattered in odd places? Well placed bathroom shelving will quite simply solve your problems in just a little time, with the most basic DIY skills. Of course, it’s nice to buy top quality bathroom cabinets, but those who need to economize can always buy second hand units.
The kitchen is one area where good organization can be a big benefit, especially for keen cooks. Working at a frantic pace when preparing food and cooking can sometimes mean you need to get your hands on a particular food item or spice, and quickly. Food storage is vital to the success, and enjoyment, of cooking. Built in kitchens can be very attractive, especially in the upper price range, but from a practical point of view, for those short of cash, used kitchen cabinets can come in very hand.
Shelves for the home can come in all sorts of materials and forms, whether within cabinets or open. The material you choose will depend on budget, purpose and surrounding décor. A period home with ancient beams and pillars may need oak shelving for it to be in keeping with surroundings, while a modern townhouse can utilize painted plywood to keep costs down.
Not everything needs to be kept indoors, so the garage and yard shed can play a great role in your storage solutions. For car tools, oils and all sorts of other things you might leave in the garage, a few handily placed shelves or racks may do the job. However, for more substantial things that you rarely use, some sort of overhead garage storage solution will make use of the free space above where you park the car.
So far as garden sheds go, wood sheds are probably the most common but are not maintenance free. Just choose what suits you, and your wallet, best and ensure your garden tool storage is catered for, as well as other garden equipment, kids outside toys, and so on.
As you go about your daily living at home, just make a note of what you can do to improve your home’s tidiness and organization, and gradually make sure you install adequate shelves, cabinets and other storage units, where you most need them.
As a final reminder, always think of the weight to be supported, and ensure that adequate brackets are used for supporting all wall units.
