If I had to choose which was the most important room to get properly organized, neat and tidy, it would be the kitchen. For those who make full use of the kitchen for cooking their own meals, having the food storage well organized is an essential for what should be part of the pleasure of a meal: the cooking. So, whoever does the cooking in the household, should demand that kitchen design should take full account of their storage and convenience needs.
If the DIY expert in the family is not the head cook, then it is the needs of the head cook which should take precedence. If there is no DIY expert, then it is best if the cook of the family is the one to choose and consult with kitchen unit suppliers, designers and installers.
Once you have worked in a kitchen for a few months, you should have a good idea of what is needed where. Storage of utensils and tools, such as hand whisks, food processors and blenders, requires separate considerations to storing plates, other dinner ware, cutlery and glasses. Try to look at separate categories of items to be stored, and ensure each is catered for in the best way.
Food storage is a key element of kitchen design. The right space and position for refrigerated food is important for everyone in the family, but especially the most active cook. There are other types of food which need to be accommodated in the pantry layout, notably dried foods and perishables that do not require refrigeration.
For the dried foods, a combination of attractive containers and pantry shelving can be used for convenience and display. Spice racks, for example, come in many forms and designs and can make attractive displays in their own right. Do not forget, though, that you can consider some worktop areas as pantry shelving, so when designing a new kitchen, do take that into account to keep costs down.
Having said that, it is not often you see too much storage space in a kitchen. I think most of us would rather have too much space in kitchen cabinets and on shelves than too little. On balance, it is best to ensure the pantry has plenty of space to enjoy cooking, rather than try and skim to save a few dollars here and there. A cluttered, disorganized kitchen might even force the household chef to go on strike and eat out at expensive restaurants every night! So it is best to get it right for a pantry paradise.
