Wood Sheds as Part of Your Garden Storage

Wood shedFor traditionalists, storing garden equipment and tools means having a wood shed in the yard or garden. In the old days, mostly that is all there was, and wooden sheds prevailed. Today, there are modern materials that may be less attractive, but are popular due to their cost, lower maintenance needs and the ease of putting them up in the garden. Plastics and vinyl come to mind, though it has to be said that high quality vinyl can cost more than cheap wood.

Everyone who has a garden, unless it is 100% concreted, requires some sort of storage area outside, and a garden shed or some other sort of storage unit. Alternatives could be something like a wooden bench with storage space underneath.

For millions of people, though, the wood shed is the only type they look for when choosing. That choice is despite the maintenance that is required with regularly having to paint with wood preservative. However, such is the appeal of the natural wooden grains to gardeners, that it seems a worthwhile chore. Plus, I am sure you agree, a freshly preserved or new wooden shed does look the part in a garden of trees, shrubs, greenery and flowers.

Deciding on which shed to buy can be an enjoyable process, with such a wide ranging choice of yard sheds. First, though, think carefully about the size you need to accommodate everything that you need to store outside. Also, take into account anything stored inside the home which you would prefer to be stored in the garden.

Most sheds these days, whether natural wood or some form of plastic or metal, come in an easily assembled kit form. Once assembled, you need to decide what sort of storage shelves, racks, cabinets or units you are going to need to store things neatly and accessibly.

If you have a strong roof and/or ceiling in the shed, then a racking unit such as used for overhead garage storage may be an option, but take professional advice on that. You will likely have gardening equipment and machinery that can be stored on the floor, but for tidiness small items can be hung on the wall or put on shelves or wall racks.

When looking at shelving solutions, there is no need to go to expensive extremes like solid oak shelving (but if you have the cash, why not?). For real economy look around for cheaper storage units, or even used kitchen cabinets. For light weight items, they should suffice.
